K9 Web Protection

My son’s friend got his first computer recently and they called today to ask about putting parental controls on it. We have been using K9 Web Protection for quite some time and I really do like it a lot. It’s easy to set up and you can block by category, plus you can add specific sites to white and black lists if you need to. You can set up times for your kids to use the internet with it, you can review what they have been doing, all sorts of stuff.

I’m big on free speech, but I also want to block some types of things that just aren’t appropriate for younger people. My son isn’t a little kid any longer, but we still use this and he is ok with it and understands why I think it’s essential. As he has grown and matured we have been able to easily go in and adjust the settings to allow more content for him.

Wow, your son seems like such a sweetie- really mature and understanding. There are quite a few people I know who’ve been rebellious to their parents for no reason at all, and you son seems very responsible compared to that. (Lol, but what would I know, I’m practically a kid myself!) My sisters and I never really needed parental controls coz we’re all pretty squeamish about things, and there was always someone around.

that is good he is understanding…definitely harder if they put up a fight, and it makes sense for a parent to have something like this.

if a kid is young, they shouldn’t be able to come across certain things and when they get older, things change. it’s that way for everything really. the internet is the same thing.

Hmm.. I think we may respectfully disagree on this one Robyn.
Do you really believe that he’s not accessing the very sites that you’re blocking over at a friends or at the library?

I don’t know that putting a lock on things is always the best solution. The lock CAN be broken and without knowledge, what are they going to do?

I’m backing you on this Robyn, I think do what you can at your home, and fully explain why. Then when he’s at someone else’s house he may follow your lead there.
