My First Visit to Trader Joe’s

March 28, 2009

in robynsonlineworld

I have heard folks talking about Trader Joe’s stores for a while now and we have a couple of locations in the St. Louis area. Finally, the other day T and I headed out to check out Trader Joe’s. I had mentioned that we were going on Twitter ahead of time and was sent this fantastically funny “commercial” video

What was even funnier was that when we went to the store we saw all those things that were in the video. It was fun looking for all those things.

I really liked the store overall. It is quite a bit smaller than the regular grocery store we visit so I’m not sure if I would be able to use that as a main shopping location. There are a lot of great different products that I don’t normally see at my regular store. Trader Joe’s carries a lot of organic items and items for those with various food allergens would find some useful products also. I do not recommend going while you are hungry because they do have a lot of snack foods and candies. Granted some of them are some healthier choices but still easy to go overboard.

We tried some blackberry juice samples and some chicken ravioli samples, the juice gets 2 thumbs up, the ravioli maybe just one (good but not yum). They had a nice selection of breads that were very fresh; I picked up some ciabatta rolls for the burgers we were having that night. A huge assortment of cheeses which I just quickly glanced at and then moved on because I knew if I stayed too long I would buy lots of cheese. The meat department is very small, but had some nicer selections of fresh items. The frozen food aisle is apparently a favorite of many and they have quite the assortment of things not sold at traditional grocery stores. I had heard lots of positive comments about many of these items so we picked up a few to have on hand for quick lunches during the week. My nephew raves about their chocolate chip cookies so even tho they were pricey we had to pick up a bag and try those – yummy!

Customer service was wonderful. Everyone working in the store was very friendly and had smiles on their faces. They quickly pointed out their weekly drawing to me during checkout also (love giveaways) so I’m hoping for a call that I won. Trader Joe also has a nice selection of reusable shopping bags, much cooler than the plain jane bags we usually find.

I think it was a successful trip and I have been pleased with everything we have tried so far. If it was a tiny bit closer to home I would go more often. It is just a couple of blocks from Hubby’s work however so I can always send him there if need be. If you have one in your area I think it is definitely worth the time to stop by and check out Trader Joe’s. Happy shopping!

I love trader joe’s but it’s not on my side of town, so we don’t go often. That and the kroger’s card gives money to the band when we use it. I love TJ’s foods though. The turkey chili is one of our stock ups.

i LOVE the rainbow brand blueberry ice cream they have there. make sure you pick up a carton the next time you go!

trader joe’s is nice because of the people who work there but I am not particularly fond of their vegetable and fruit selection. We only have one here and it’s a bit small. Still, good place!

I’m glad to hear that you liked it. Frozen food aisle has excellent perogis and their “Trader Ming” line is great. Let me know if you win. I’ve been entering into their drawings for years and have never gotten the call. Good luck!

I was in San Francisco last summer for a wedding and went in to one just because I had heard so much about it! It is a bit like our sunflower market.

I’m always in Trader Joe’s. Love the different variety of items they have. I pretty much shop there at least once a week but not as our main grocery run.

I have many of their bags and enter the contest every time I go since I use their bags. Cool place!

Fortunately for us, we have one just down the road from us so that is our “go to” store for picking up milk or bread but we buy about half of our food there because it’s convenient and has all the good qualities mentioned in the video. We love just about everything we’ve tried there.

I love shopping at Trader Joe’s, but normally only for certain items. They have great milk, bananas, cheeses and pizza sauce. I don’t think I could do all of my grocery shopping there.

And…they always have yummy samples to try!

i totally love TJs. my faves are the brownie bites, fruit spreads, & sunflower butter. their avocados are the cheapest around. plus they have good frozen burritos n stuff to bring to work for lunch. and hummus. and awesome greek style yogurt. i'm hungry.

Don’t have any here in North Texas but in Boston where I used to live, people love TJ’s!

Oh nashing (or is it gnashing?) of teeth! We moved to an area that I fear will never see a Trader Joes! Thanks for the memories!

Robyn, the video was great…it so reflected everything TJ’s! I’ve never been in one with a cart scanner, however. Thanks for posting the link.

I first became a Trader Joe’s addict in Los Angeles and missed them in AZ, but for years now there has been one about 1/2 mile from my house. It’s very convenient to just run in and get those things I like to get there.

They are great for nuts (and all kinds of strange flavors like they showed in the video) and dried fruit. I always buy their gallon of tea..they usually have about 3 different teas (not all gallon size) that have no sugar or any sweeteners in it. I drink a lot of iced tea and it’s hard to find ones with no sweetener in them.

    Have fun shopping.

It’s a hike to drive there but I do like Trader Joe’s frozen food the best. I like the Kung Pao chicken bowl, Trader Joe frozen cheese pizza and the Chicken fried rice. I also tried their pizza sauce, but made my own pizza dough–quite excellent. However, I was disappointed in their produce specifically the fruits. They didn’t look fresh and were wrinkled.

Hmm, I’ll keep it in mind :-)

too bad we don’t have one of these close to us!

I freaking love Trader Joes. I go nuts there. I love the dark chocolate covered pretzels. Seriously so tasty.

  • elkaye

I always hear great things about Trader Joe’s, but there isn’t one in my state (Florida).

  • Allison

Trader Joe’s is close to our church, but my husband likes the wine and beer selection so we usually have to go on a day other than Sunday.

We love TJ’s and if I went more often, I’d buy to much, so I try to go only once a month or so and stock up on our favorites. I always pick up one new thing. They have these Won-Ton chips that are AMAZING. I see it as more of an affordable specialty store, so it’s always a treat to grab a bunch of stuff and then have it only ring up to about $30. Nice.

  • Betty N

At this point, we don’t have a Trader Joe’s within reasonable driving distance but it sounds like it would be a fun place to pick up some different items.

  • Purrcy

There is a Trader Joe’s near me and I like it too as a supplement to my regular grocery store and shop there for specialty item only TJ stocks FYI: Consumer Reports did a price survey on grocery prices some years agop and as I remember Trader Joe’s had some of the lowest. lramseyer@gmail.com

We don’t have Trader Joe’s. I would love to know what that Chunk Juice is though!

  • Jackie

I love Trader Joes! That is our weekly grocery store. It is really affordable! The pomagranate green tea is TDF!

  • Karen Goodman

I’m not such a huge fan of Trader Joe’s. I want everything I need at one store, and there is just too much they don’t have.

But, I will say that they have great, inexpensive pizza dough in the refrigerator section. I had a make-your-own pizza party once and bought about 15 packages of dough for about $1 each. Each and tasted great!
