Walmart Remodel – UGH!

I have been avoiding shopping at Walmart. Our closest store frankly has never been that great – cranky employees, dirty store, always out of stock on normal items, etc. I normally would drive a few miles farther to the nicer Walmart. Then the started to make the good store into a Super Walmart. The last time we went it was crazy. I cannot believe how HUGE they are making this store. Frankly, I just do not want to shop at a place that big because Murphy’s Law says I would need something on two completely different ends of the store. So since they were all crazy I made a few trips to the closer store, guess what? They are remodeling this store too! They are not making it into a super store, but why in the world are they doing them at the same time? Come to find out the next closest store after these is also being remodeled! It seems Walmart is not being hurt any by the current economy I guess.

Tonight there were a couple of items that I needed that Target does not carry so I had to go to Walmart. Upon entering it was not too bad, just a whole lot of emptiness actually. Then I actually tried to find things on my list. The store is totally turned around and aisles going every which way. It makes no sense how they are laying things out. Obviously some things are out of order still, but you could tell some spots were finished and they make no sense.

My biggest grips is not that they are remodeling. It is that they do not have people in the stores to help guide their customers around during the remodel. Maybe some extra signs would be helpful as well. There were plenty of employees in the store, but as usual they were standing around talking to each other rather than helping customers (this store is bad about that). My last gripe on this visit was that the cashier seemed annoyed – she rolled her eyes actually – when I said I had my own bags when it was my turn. I mean come on we are all trying to reuse bags these days, don’t roll your eyes at people when they actually do it.

Walmart work on that customer service please!

It must be a per-store thing. The local Wal-Mart is usually pretty good about customer service (though the store itself—selection, pricing—is pretty bad).

Target, however, has been uniformly bad. Surly employees, bad pricing, dirty stores… and the first thing you see going into one is an armed guard. I’m entering a store, not a prison, for crying out loud. (I’m not against security, or even armed security… but don’t confront all of your customers the moment they walk in the door!)

Our Walmart is remodeling too, and everything is out of order. They do have signs up but only in the front of the store, so by the time I get to the back I have no idea where the things I need have been moved to. I usually avoid Walmart anyway because if you go anytime but between midnight and 4 am, it’s so crowded even the express lanes take forever. Seems like you can never just quickly run into a Walmart for one or two things.

Lately, it seems so hard to find good customer service in stores. There are so many people out of a job that would love to work…maybe those who want to stand around should be let go or someone who will actually do their job. I myself love our walmart…everyone is very friendly and helpful

we don’t have a Walmart near us and although they have good prices I’m sort of glad. Walmart depresses me.

we shop at walmart all the time and i hate it. shop there well because it’s what we can afford unless there are good sales other places. (the town we live in has 2 grocery stores). the walmart by me always has rotten fruit and expired food, people are rude and complain when i use my reusable totes
walmarts are getting to big. beauty is on one side of the store food is on the other. making things harder for shoppers

We have two Walmarts, and no Target. One is pretty good about customer service, the other one is fairly crummy. One thing that makes me super angry, is that if you’re waiting in a checkout line at any of their stores…and they suddenly open another checkout nearby…they invite customers from the BACK of the line, to the new checkout…who’ve only been waiting, like, a few seconds!
Huulloo! I’ve got a cart of frozen foods up here at the HEAD of the clogged-up line—been here for ten minutes, standing in a melted-frost puddle!!
But—if you dare to complain, they act like you’re going postal, or something.
I can’t get over those New Zealand college kids, whom Ellen is bringing for a visit to the U.S.
One of their three “big destinations” is Walmart…little do they know!!!

What is up with the Walmart cashiers? They hate the bags here, too. I’ve gotten to the point where I avoid Walmart as much as possible–after all, do I really NEED $1 deep fried mozzerella sticks?

Ours remodeled a year ago. Now i can’t find anything. And during the remodeling I wandered down an aisle that was NOT blocke off, and ended up in a totally blocked off area. Had to climb over a tape to get out!

We’ve had several new Targets go up around us but nothing in the way of remodeling – either at Walmart or Target from what I can tell. thanks (freaaa@gmail.com

I’ve been avoiding shopping at my local Walmart because the the store is dirty, the service is terrible, and it really isn’t that cheap compared to other stores. Usually, I try to get things online or at a local Target.

i don’t like walmart to begin with. it’s always crowded and takes forever to get through a line.

I don’t like Wal-Mart, I get a headache every time I go in there. And I live in Wal-Mart country! Just 45 minutes away from their corporate headquarters in Bentonville, Arkansas.

You think they are making your walmart store huge, you should see mine, it’s like you’re inside the Pentagon! You need roller skates to make all the way thru the store. skyxsky27[at]gmail.com

Our Wal-Mart is horrible. I don’t think I’ve been in a Wal-Mart I like yet. They are always crowded and have rude pushy people shopping there and the cashiers are slow as all hell. Target is my store of choice.

  • Stacey Moore

the people at our local walmart usually give me a hard time about my coupons (especially the free items i receive)! the costumer service at our local store could improve as well!

  • Heather

I agree when a large big box store like that undergoes a huge remodel or mix up of sorts, the least they can do for their customers is get organized and be as helpful as possible. People will remember that.

  • javamom

Oh that’s too bad… I agree with Benjamin Geiger: it must be a per-store phenomenon, because our Walmart has associates on skates who will fly away and grab what you need for you! Maybe not everytime, but I was the recipient of this great service on an outing with an overly tired 4-year-old and hungry baby! I’d say give it some time, they might just be experiencing some growing pains. Best wishes!

I agree with you on the Walmart conditions. I have 3 superwalmarts in our city, sadly the one by my house is also going through a remodel. The employees there are so lazy they don’t want to work, nothing is ever stocked. My son in law is a department manager at a walmart 1200 miles away and always ask why do you drive clear across town over 12 miles to go to that walmart, well after visiting he now knows why. He stated they should be reported and made the comment that at his store they would never be allowed to have those conditions.
But what can we do walmart has the majority of the backing by repeat customers.

I’ve only been to Walmart once. The only thing of note for me was that their glazed donuts were pretty good.

What was with that rude employee who rolled her eyes? Some people need a listen on good manners.

#1 I hate Walmart and this just gives me another reason to. I have no idea why stores have to move crap around. Oh wait I know! To get you to walk around more!

  • samsakara

I haven’t been to ours in awhile since they were doing work on it. They changed the outside color to a more earth tone which looks nice. But when I was last there they had some areas tapped off. They had everything squished together since they had less space to work with and hardly had any girls clothes.
