Fish Stick Friday – Review

Van de Kamps Fish SticksMrs. Pauls Fish SticksI was raised Catholic, that means during lent you ate fish on Fridays. I’m not sure how it is in other parts of the country, but around St. Louis it seems that fish is always the special in restaurants on Fridays too and not just during lent. Even in elementary school I remember having fish sticks on Fridays. This all means I ate a lot of fish sticks growing up. Of course, we ate other fish too, my family loves to fish, but fish sticks are quick & easy so you just ate a lot of them.

Now as the chief cook in my house I get requests about two times a month from Hubby and Taylor for fish sticks, shells & cheese, and peas for dinner. I had been using one brand for years and years and it was fine. Then I was asked to try the improved Van de Kamp’s and Mrs. Paul’s fish sticks.

First I love that they are in a freshness pouch now. I really dislike frozen food just being in a cardboard box (just a pet peeve), so I feel this pouch helps protect my food. There also was a noticeable difference in how crispy both brands of the fish sticks got when I baked them – very nice, I like crispy fish sticks! The biggest shocker to me is that Hubby and Taylor both noticed a difference in taste and they both said the Van de Kamp’s and Mrs. Paul’s both were better than the other brand I have been using for years. I think this has to do with the fact that these fish sticks are made from 100% whole white fish fillets and not minced fish. We have now officially switched brands! I have to add that we tried a fish stick taco recipe that they sent me also – that was not a favorite of ours – we just like fish sticks the regular way, dipped in ketchup!
