Easy & Inexpensive Holiday Decorating Idea

I really wish I was a better photographer because in person this looks really very cool. Regardless, I wanted to share this super easy and inexpensive holiday decorating idea. This is the second year I’ve done this at my house.

This is a window in the family room (we do it on both the windows). It happens to have a large black shade on it (to block out the sun when we need) and there is a valance at the top (we just made it with wood, cotton batting, fabric and a staple gun). During the holidays I hang ornaments down from it to add to the festive decor.

What you need:

Ornaments of your choice – I found one of those large containers of plastic ornaments. Half are solid silver, the other half glitter silver.

String or ribbon of your choice – I used a stretchy silver cording, but really anything you want that goes with your ornaments and decor will work.

Scissors – to cut the ribbon

Tape – This is to hang the ornaments with on the backside of your valance (or under your curtain rod). We find that packing tape or duct tape works well for this and is easily removed off the fabric of our valance after the holidays.

How to do it:

Cut lengths of ribbon in various sizes. Try for some short, some medium, and some long lengths. You do not need to measure though – just eyeball it. Tie one end of the ribbon onto the ornament. Now just arrange the ornaments in a pleasing manner and use the tape to hang them. There is no right or wrong, just do what looks nice to you.

Pets & Kids – Obviously if you have pets or kids in your house you need to take this into consideration as far as how low you will hang them. The child part is not an issue for us, but we do have 3 cats. I am really surprised they don’t want to play with them, but they have left them alone for the most part.

When we take these down we just leave them attached to the ribbon, but remove the tape. Next year we just tape them back up.
