I’ve used several different security programs over the years here at home and recommended and installed many on friends and families computers as well. One of the first ones I used was a Norton product – I honestly don’t recall which one was my first even. Norton’s products were great for me for several years, but then I noticed they were really slowing down things on my computers for a time. Lots of other folks noticed it too. I switched to other products – actually free products at that time – and I was really pleased with them. Using multiple products generally wasn’t that big of a deal at the time even. Then things started getting more complicated again. The free programs pushed much harder for you to upgrade to their paid versions and tried tricking people into getting the trial paid versions rather than free, they started removing some of the usefulness in the free versions, etc. This is understandable that they wanted to make money, but what it did for me personally was turn me off to their products as a whole.
Then I began hearing rumblings about Norton again. This time they were much better rumblings. It seems Norton was listening and had revamped their products to make them use less system resources and keep our machines running at faster speeds, all while still protecting us in multiple ways. I did some research and decided it was time to give Norton a try again. This time I opted for Norton 360 v3.0 – a suite of security and performance programs all in one package. This is not a small feat at our house, to change security programs, because we have multiple computers and I find it easier to maintain them if they are all running the same thing. The multi-license packs Norton offers made that a bit easier and a bit cheaper for me.
At our home we have been using Norton 360 v3.0 since April of this year and I am very happy with it. It has run on our Windows XP, Vista, and now 7 computers without any major issues – I just had one small tweak to get it running properly on Windows 7. You do have to pay for the annual subscriptions to keep things up to date, but I have always found Norton to excel in this area and it is much cheaper than fixing the computer if something sneaks in! Since we started using it, I have recommended it to anyone who is willing to pay for the security programs and subscriptions – it is worth the money and more reliable than many of the free programs out there. Think about your shopping online this time of year too – Norton 360 v3.0 can help protect your information even. If you have kids, make sure you install the optional Norton Online Family tools as well to allow and block what you want for your kids – we use this as well.
Norton does offer a 30-day free trial if you want to give it a try before buying even. You can download the trial here, as well as see other free trial programs they offer.
