As the prices of desktop, laptop/notebook, and netbook computers continues to go down, they have become really popular gift ideas. While it is a really nice idea to get someone a computer as a gift, you also need to be sure it is the kind of computer they can actually use.
The biggest thing is to know the needs of who you are buying for. Find out the answers to some important questions before you buy to make sure you get the right gift.
Is this a family computer with younger children? If so, they may want a single computer to keep in the main family area. A desktop might be a good answer for them.
Is the computer for someone who needs to use it in multiple locations but still have a fully functional computer? Then a laptop computer might be a better option. There are a variety of sizes in laptops also, some are much bigger and heavier than others. Again, think about how the recipient will be using it.
There are also netbook computers – these are typically the lowest cost computers you can find these days. There is a drawback though, in order to be so small, lightweight, and low-priced, manufacturers have taken out many of the functions. They do not have a CD/DVD drive so you can’t easily load new software, watch movies, listen to music CDs, etc.. The processors are much slower also which means they aren’t capable of running other programs often. Netbooks are great for simple note taking (say in class) or for light internet surfing.
Are you giving a computer to a gamer? They have very different needs, the computers need more power and a graphics card to let them play their games usually.
What exactly does the lucky recipient plan on doing with the computer? Are they going to listen to music, edit movies, use it for schoolwork? Find out what you can to take to the store (or use online customer service help) to help the associates help you find the best computer.
Many of the computer manufacturers now make computers in all different sizes and price ranges. If you are shopping online, check their websites to see if they offer a guide to finding the right computer – these can be very helpful to get you on the right path.
Even if you aren’t geeky yourself, you can still go in armed with the right information to get the right computer gift for the geek you love!
