I love cheese, Hubby loves cheese, Taylor loves cheese. Doesn’t everyone love cheese? Ok – I know not everyone loves cheese – but a heck of a lot of us do. When an email came asking if we wanted to sample some cheese in connection with the Wisconsin Cheese Cupid I said yes!
During the holidays I like to set out different cheeses for nibbling, always with crackers, sometimes with sausages or fruits and nuts too. One thing I haven’t ever tried is pairing my cheeses with wines, beer, and liquor actually. Over the years I definitely have recognized the differences in food and quality – not everything is the same. For example, while Velveeta has some fine qualities as a “cheese food” it is clearly not the same as an aged sharp cheddar or a creamy piece of brie. So while I have learned a lot in food, I can’t say that I have learned the same way about pairings. Now is as good a time as any to start learning though.
Enter the Wisconsin Cheese Cupid! You tell it what kind of cheese you have and it tells you the different alcohol that it tastes great with. You can also do it in reverse, tell it what you plan on drinking and it will tell you what cheese to eat with it. How perfect is this for party planning during the holiday season? You can do this on the Wisconsin Cheese Cupid site, but even better, there’s an app for that – yes an iPhone app! It works great (although you can only start with the alcohol on the app) and is perfect for when you are shopping – just whip out the iPhone and you can find the perfect cheese to buy for you and your guests.
Now, even more than just nibbling on cheese and having a drink – think about how helpful this is for cooking! Want to make a Beer & Cheddar soup (it is so yummy)? You can use Cupid to find out what kind of beer would work best. How about if you are making an Alfredo sauce for some pasta? Now you can find out which kind of white wine would pair up best to use in your sauce with the Parmesan cheese. I’m much better at picking out cheese than alcohol for recipes, so this helps me tremendously!
