Getting Over the Guilty-Mom Syndrome (and giveaway)

General Mills CerealsBreakfast is one of those meals that I have skipped most of my life. When we were homeschooling, even Taylor skipped this often because we usually got a late start on our days (one of the joys of homeschooling). Now that we are trying public school again I know I need to send him off to school with a good breakfast since he is on a schedule there.

While I would love to “cook” a full breakfast for him each morning, frankly that just doesn’t happen. I’m not a morning person either so many times I just am not ready for that kind of stuff. Some days I am and I make eggs or pancakes. I’ve learned I can make a large quantity of steel cut oatmeal and reheat it throughout the week for him too. Other days – well it comes down to cereal. To be honest, I really feel guilty sometimes for that. So many places we see/hear/read that we need to do x, y, and z in the morning for our kids – and in a perfect world we all could – but life happens. We are busy, we are stressed, we have 1000 things on our minds. Most of us grew up as cereal eating kids even and heck, we aren’t bad people for it! So I am officially trying to get over the I-feel-guilty-for-not-cooking-a-hot-meal-every-morning-mom-syndrome!

The good news is that cereal companies like General Mills are committed to reducing sugars in cereals – especially those marketed to kids. They are also working to increase things such as calcium and vitamin D, and providing whole grains. General Mills has a page about cereal & health that is interesting also – you might want to take a look. As an adult who grew up with the previous versions I can tell the difference sometimes, but our kids don’t have that cereal history so to them it’s all good still. Ready to buy a box of cereal? Taylor would always recommend Honey Nut Cheerios – his personal favorite. Here is a $1 off coupon for General Mills Cereals you can print out.
