Do your kids constantly have their ear buds or headphones on? Have you ever talked to them about the volume? Science has shown that prolonged exposure to excessive noise can damage hearing. I know when I was younger I just wanted the music loud most of the time. Hubby actually grew up with a father in a band and spent a lot of time at his performances in front of speakers, this along with ongoing ear infection problems as a child has left Hubby with significant hearing loss. My own father worked for Anheuser-Busch and didn’t wear ear plugs for many years and has hearing loss from being exposed to the noise there.
Hearing loss among young people is reported to be on the rise. There are strong concerns that a generation of young people could end up with prevalent hearing loss. Media consumption among kids is on the rise also – this means they are exposed to these sounds for longer during each day. There are 2 big things you can talk to your kids about to help:
- Keep the volume down. A good guide is half volume.
- Limit listening time. Give your hearing “quiet breaks”.
