Hubby is really into BBQing and grilling (don’t ask him to tell you the difference because it is a long story and I don’t care what he says – he is wrong). He makes his own sauce when he BBQs that is amazing! I love this stuff, I could swim in it I love it so much. That doesn’t mean we aren’t open to trying new sauces, glazes, rubs, or what have you when offered though. So when Family Review Network offered me a chance to review Herman T’S BBQ Sauce Mix I naturally accepted.
Herman T’s is actually a powdered mix. You add water and ketchup to the mix and bring it to a bowl and then simmer for 5 minutes before using. There is an original and a Spicy Hot version. Tonight we tried the Spicy Hot version exactly according to package directions. Hubby grilled some ham steaks and added the sauce for a different taste. Now it was not bad, but it just didn’t have as much of a BBQ taste as we would have liked – you could still taste the ketchup in it to us. It also was not what we would call spicy, but that might just be us. Maybe it would be better if we made it ahead of time and gave it longer to sit before using it, but then that defeats the purpose I think of having a handy powder mix to use on hand. The mix does have a distinct BBQ smell and taste to it so I’m going to give it a try as a dry flavoring on some other things and see what happens – maybe a new way to dress up popcorn or a dry rub for chicken?
