A Great Steak Dinner at Home

Growing up in the Midwest, steak is a pretty common dinner selection. My grandpa actually raised cattle on his small farm. We had steak fairly often growing up and now luckily Hubby loves to grill and is really very good at it. While we enjoy going out to a restaurant for steak occasionally, it is not in our budget to do that all the time. Steak was on sale today at the grocery store so I decided to pick up our favorites so Hubby could grill them at home. The entire cost of the meal was probably around $35 for the steaks, potatoes, zucchini, wine, and miscellaneous potato toppings and that serves all three of us in our family. This is a huge savings over going out for a steak dinner.

Grilling steaks and zucchini

I generally shop at Dierbergs, a chain here in the St. Louis area, and they have a nice meat department including an actual butcher counter still. When I am going to buy steaks like this I go straight to the counter generally. I picked out everyone’s favorite cuts. A Porterhouse for Hubby, a New York Strip for me, and a T-Bone for Taylor.

Here is my steak. I like mine cooked medium and Hubby did that perfectly! I have Hubby sprinkle McCormick’s Montreal Steak Seasoning on mine also – but this steak could have been plain and still had a great taste.

Porterhouse Steak with Baked Potato and Grilled Zucchini

Hubby’s giant Porterhouse. No, we do not eat giant cuts of meat like this all the time. This was out of the ordinary for us.

You can see that we had baked potatoes also. They aren’t really baked, we scrub them, poke a few holes, and cook them in the microwave. I also picked up some organic zucchini at the store. I just quartered these, drizzled with a little extra virgin olive oil, and then seasoned with salt, fresh pepper, and garlic powder. Hubby threw them on the grill while he cooked the steaks – super easy!

flipflop headshrinker sweet red wine

Now my wine aficionado friends, I do know that a sweet red wine is not the “right” pairing for steak, but hey it is what I liked at the store when they had samples the other day. We do not drink wine with dinner generally, but since I had it and we splurged on the steaks I figured why not. flipflop wines are very tasty and not expensive at all.

Do you all grill steaks often? Any tips you would like to share?

P.S. For my vegetarian and vegan friends, just focus on the zucchini Smile

Disclosure: None, this are all just things I bought myself and thought I would share with my readers.

We grill year round- and we are in the MidWest. Hubby will fire up the grill during a blizzard! I guess the only tip would find a butcher you trust the cut of meat really does make a difference.

Yum, we love to grill steaks.  I like to grill the zucchini also.  Have you done corn on the cob on the grill?  Awesome!

That steak looks ridiculous good!  I’m a midwesterner also, and we are definitely meat and potatoes kinda people!  And I’ve done some reviews for FlipFlop wines before and you can’t beat that flavor for the price!  Thanks for sharing!

We love to grill steaks when we can. I think out biggest tip is to not do too much to certain cuts, like NY strip, porterhouse and filet mignon. They don’t need much, maybe a sprinkle of kosher salt. If grilling a london broil or chuck roast, marinate!

Thanks for the steak recipe. My husband loves steak and I have a habit of overcooking it :(
