Classic Margaritas and Mint Juleps This Weekend

May 5 this year is obviously Cinco de Mayo in which most of the United States has turned into a let’s eat Mexican food and drink Margaritas day. This year the Kentucky Derby also falls on May 5, and for this we need Mint Juleps too! No need to pick just one – start with the Mint Julep during the horse race and then switch on over to Margaritas in the evening! Here are classic recipes for both drinks.

Margarita

Margarita

  • 1 oz tequila
  • dash of Triple Sec (orange liqueur)
  • The juice of 1/2 a lime
  • ice
  • salt

In shaker combine tequila, Triple Sec, lime juice, and ice. Shake. Rub the rim of the glass with the lime and dip into salt. Pour drink into rimmed glass and garnish with lime. Enjoy!

You can of course do this in a blender to make frozen margaritas if you like and you can add other juices to make other flavors.

Mint_Julep

Mint Julep

  • frosted glass
  • 4-5 fresh sprigs of mint
  • 1 tsp powdered sugar
  • 2 tsp water
  • crushed ice
  • 2 1/2 oz Bourbon

A frosted glass is preferred, but not required. In the glass place the mint leaves, sugar, and water and muddle. Fill glass with crushed ice and then add bourbon.  Garnish with mint and serve with a straw. Enjoy!

Remember as always to drink responsibly!

I’ve never had a mint julep but margaritas are my favorite! I prefer them frozen but will take it either way…and without the salt!

I’ve never had a mint julep, and I’m not sure that I would like one – I do like margaritas – only the flavored ones!

I love a good margarita. Yummy!

We’re having mock Mint Juleps this afternoon.  Using up some of the excess mint out of the flower garden.  Very hot and humid today so it will be very refreshing.

There is nothing better than a good margarita on a hot day- I like the slushy kind!

Never been a traditional margarita fan.  I don’t like the salt.  Now the flavored ones with sugared glass rims are another story!!!  Mint juleps, meh.  Now put that mint in a mojito and now we’re talkin’!
