Many of us are at ease using social network to share things like vacation photos or vacation events. However, I would love to see more people take advantage of sharing about local venues on social networks also. A good example of this was on Memorial Day when my husband and I went to the Veterans Memorial Walkway in O’Fallon, Missouri.
We have passed by this many times since it opened, but we had never actually pulled in and taken time to see what it was all about. For whatever reason, on Memorial Day it popped into my head and I asked Hubby if he would like to go out there, he agreed. We pulled in and walked up and took it in. Then I pulled out my iPhone and started taking pictures first. I took several different photos and tried to zoom in on the monuments for all the different branches as well. Then I checked in using Foursquare and included a photo. Next I used Instagram to upload the photos and while doing that I used the geotag function to mark the venue name and location also along with my caption plus those photos each were automatically shared from Instagram to my Twitter account and Facebook account. When I started doing all this while sitting on the bench I took a moment to tell Hubby why I was doing this – it was my way of sharing that I felt it was important. I also am hoping that from my sharing more people in the St. Louis area would learn that this monument exists and they would come and visit it. Plus, when others are in the area and using apps that show local things it is more likely to come up if more people are talking about it. Again, that is part of how I show something is important to me.
As a do traveling for work I tend to share a lot about that, but I am also trying now to really focus on local things as well. I think the St. Louis area has some really great things to offer people – even out in the burbs where I am – and I want everyone to learn about them. Along with the social networks I mentioned already that I used, others that would be great include Flickr, Facebook Places, Color, Yelp, and so many more – whatever you are comfortable with using.
What is one of your favorite places local to you that you will share on a social network next time you go?
