My Healthy Habits Goals for BlogHer

So yes, I’m still struggling with getting healthy BUT I am still making those little steps here and there and adding things when I can. These things may not add up to much just yet however I feel proud of myself when I do them and that encourages me to keep making other good choices. In a couple of weeks I will be headed to the BlogHer 2012 conference in New York again and these are some of the healthy habits that I am going to try to stick to as often as I can while I am there.

  • Bumble Bee Foods is sponsoring Robyn Wright at BlogHer 2012Drink water!

This is really important for me. When you travel, especially flying, you tend to get dehydrated. Drinking plenty of water helps PLUS it also helps me with my next item.

  • Drink LESS soda!

Ideally this would say drink no soda, but I’m trying to be realistic here.

  • Walking is exercise!

While I’m still riding my recumbent bike at home, I haven’t upgrade to a treadmill yet and so my walking still struggles. I promise to push myself a bit though with walking during the conference

  • Get enough sleep!

My motto is usually “I will sleep when I get home”, but this is really not healthy. I promise that I will try to get more sleep than I usually do. It’s ok if I miss a few things late at night.

  • Eat better snacks!

I am going to pack a couple of healthy snacks in my suitcase to have in my hotel room. This will include a couple of Bumble Bee Sensations which have a little can of flavored tuna and crackers and 18g of protein!

  • Eat better meals!

Along with healthier snacks, I also need to make good choices at actual meals. My goal is more veggies and less breads.

  • Listen to my body!

Because I am on a very long journey to getting healthy it is really important that I listen to my body. If I push too hard then I just end up causing more problems or not enjoying myself. So if I take a cab somewhere that everyone else walks I’m not going to shoot myself, it is ok. I’m a work in progress!

Do you have any healthy habits you are trying to keep up with during BlogHer? For my friends who already have mastered this being healthy thing I would love more suggestions and ideas that I can add to my list for BlogHer and beyond.

DISCLOSURE: As noted in the image above, Bumble Bee Foods is sponsoring me to attend BlogHer as part of the #BeeSquad. Bumble Bee Foods is not an official sponsor of the BlogHer Conference though.

Robyn, I’m going to try to stay well hydrated, lots of water. I’m also going to pack comfy shoes & try to budget enough time to walk to different events to get in some much needed exercise.

I agree with the drinking more water.  Water is all I drink, but I don’t drink enough of it.  I found that putting it in a glass with a straw helps me to drink more so I’ve started doing that.  I got one of those plastic tumblers with a lid and straw and carry that around.  Also to have my house stocked with healthy choices. I tend to wait until I’m starving and then just grab whatever I see even if it’s unhealthy so having nutritious foods ready around the house really helps, also.

I agree, making the water and healthy snacks as easy to grab and drink/eat as the junk food will help a lot!

Your goals sound very similar to mine.  I have had a setback being diagnosed with severe psoriasis in March, trying different treatments, and now finding out I am evidently allergic to Embrel – the latest treatment.  I did not know psoriasis is an immune system disease that is non-curable and often contracted by people with arthritis, as I have.  I am now more susceptible to infections, TB, and some cancers – particularly lymphoma.  For me one of the side effects of the meds has been weight gain, when I already had 50# to lose.  I am not sure what will happen now but I am trying hard to incorporate the same things into my life that you have mentioned above.  I am allergic to lots of things, so that is not fun, but I know I can do this! I wish you good luck on your path to health too!

I know it can be so hard Judy. Hang in there and I hope they find the right meds for you that helps you and has few side effects too.

taking your own snacks and making sure to have bottled water at all times should help, i always want to pig out when i’m away somewhere and eating at restaurants most of the time

I too write about my weight loss journey. Here are a couple things I do at conferences to stay healthy:
    1. Squeeze lemon into your water every morning. This stimulates your liver to remove toxins throughout the day.
    2. Pack almonds. Best is 10-15 at a time. I make these in snack bags & pack 2 bags for each day.
    3. If you must have that roll at lunch, just eat half.
    4. I only allow myself 1 soda a day, so I savor it and make it count

Good luck! And know there’s many of us trying to make BlogHer healthy too :)

I just want to jump in and say that eating more (especially fresh) fruits and vegetables will also help you stay more hydrated.  A cucumber, for example, is about 95% water, so if you eat extra things like that and bread as you mentioned, that’s almost two goals in one.

  • @rkosully

Those are great goals. Do you have a water bottle that you love? A nice stainless steel or glass or bamboo one that you enjoy carrying with you can really help encourage you to drink more water. Also, I like to add sugar-free on-the-go flavor packets (e.g. Arizona sugar-free lemonade) to my water bottle. They have zero calories but taste great! Then you can just rinse the bottle afterwards and re-fill with more water. Good job setting the goals!

At home I have a 3M water bottle system that I love, but I do need to get another water bottle I really like for on the go.

Those are all excellent ideas for good health! Due to a medication I take that leaves me half dehydrated, I literally drink 10-12 full water bottles daily. I will never develop kidney stones, that’s for sure! I am not much of a soda drinker either. I probably have a soda 2-3 times a year. I agree that every little bit helps. I think that getting enough sleep is one of the most important tips of all. Based upon research, our bodies do the majority of healing and rejuvenation while in deep REM sleep and if you are a poor sleeper it can lead to all kinds of health issues. Thanks for posting such important health tips!

ugh I hear you. I have gained over 50 pounds easily in the last 3 years. I used to be healthy and work out, but have no motivation at all. I need to push myself though because I am fed up with myself. I am trying to eat healthy and allow myself one cheat day during the week. We are also of thinking of moving either right by the beach or in the redwoods to make ourselves more motivated.

I totally kicked the soda habit last year…yeah!   Water is the most important.   I have also started drinking metamucil for the very important fiber!   I feel I haven’t been snacking as much as I used to which is a big plus.

Anything healthy I had went right out the window at BlogHer’12. We paid $5 for ONE regular bottle of water. I had a horrible time finding water, coffee, and diet coke. I did figure out that the guys at the Halal carts would haggle prices with me if I bought 2. :)

Also, wondering how this went for you. Maintaining your own healthy habits while in NYC.

Ugg.. what is this thing “sleep” you’re talking about? :) I feel like I haven’t known good sleep in so long (my littlest one is 15 months and teething horribly at the moment.. and has been, it seems for the last many, many months..so she’s up at night still.) I also need to drink more water and I have, as of recently, tried to start jogging. It’s hard, but the half hour to myself on those days feels amazing! Now, if I can just stop craving oreo blizzards, I’ll be on track!!
