Swag, Samples, Freebies and Such Never Go to Waste

I am very lucky to receive a ton of things as part of my work in social media. I get things of all sizes and values for a variety of reasons. I do use, try, sample much of it myself. Some items are given to friends and family. None of it goes to waste though. I donate some things directly to causes when it fits but a lot of my extra things accumulate and I pass them along to my mom.

My mom is one of these really nice people that donates lots of her own time, talent, energy, and money to causes she believes in. She attends many charity events throughout the year along with those she runs or works at herself. Mom is able to take the extra items I pass along to her and use them for door prizes or to make amazing themed gift baskets that the raffle off at the events. Last week I cleaned off my shelves in my home office and sent her home with lots of goodies. This is what she did with them…..

Swag, Samples, Freebies, and Such are donated

Amazing, isn’t she? I did not inherit her ability to make baskets, tie bows, or make things anywhere close to what she can do. At least I have the ability to obtain these items though that she can put to good use.

So for my readers who were wondering what happens to things – here is the answer. For the brands and PR reps who share so many goodies with all of us and sometimes wonder what is happening to them – here is the answer. For my fellow bloggers and social media people who wonder what to do with their extra items – here is the answer. Everything goes to a number of good causes! Thanks Mom for making it happen!

Do you donate items to causes or are you more the person who likes to buy the raffle tickets or attend events to win the items like these?

Disclosure: As the post states many of these items are received by brands and PR firms. Not all items mentioned above where though. Thoughts and opinions are my own.

I pass along and donate stuff too! Some go to friends as presents;). Some goes to a women’s recovery home or other charity!

Those baskets look fantastic!  I donate some of my items for nursing home bingo prizes and others for Toys for Tots.  But now I’m going to also “steal” your idea for my aunt’s church charity Silent Auction.  Thanks!

I am not a blogger, but when I do win items, I share them!  Whether it is
as gifts, and also take them to the Food Pantries.  Thanks,  Cindi

Your mom is talented.  I too lack your ability to tie beautiful ribbons and make cellophane do what I want it to do.  However, in a former life, I was often the auction chairman for the high school athletic boosters or the PTA, and it was my job to get the items that went into the basket.  Both are hard work, but making the basket pretty definitely helped sell them for top dollar.

What a beautiful job your mom did. I find it fun to donate some of the items I win each year to our local shelters and rescues. I also donate toys to Santa’s Helpers our local organization that adopts families for Christmas.

I’m both, I guess.  I’ve won several little things from instant win sweepstakes and how many water bottles could I possibly need?  So lots of the free samples I send off for and excess little things end up as teacher gifts, or a treat for the postal carrier.  I keep a box for the Women and Children’s Shelter, things like that.  Some little notebooks and kid-friendly things end up as Trick-or-Treat goodies at Halloween too.

That is such a great idea! I am not a blogger that receives samples and such but I do try to enter as many contests as I can. Sometimes I win things that are not all that useful for me in particular so I have wrapped them up and brought them to our local nursing home. I work as a community nurse as well so I am aware of the residents that don’t often get visitors and/or have no family and I bring them a gift. It is always so amazing to see their faces light up. It always makes me feel good so I keep doing it. ;-)

Your Mom is very talented. I think you recently mentioned that she could tie a perfect bow–it’s nice to see her work and know that many people benefit from her time and generosity.

Honestly I share quite a bit. Since I do volunteer at a food giveaway site, (Salvation Army ) I have won diaper coupons and given it to them and we have a mens and womens shelter close by who also get things too.(lots of the samples I send for) Throughout the year I enter contests for kids items and have a huge pile for Toys for Tots.
I like your Moms idea with baskets/bows- maybe I will give that a go for the womens shelter!

Your mother is brilliant! I never thought of using swag/freebies for charity raffles. That’s a wonderful idea. Thanks for sharing!

  • angelgenius27

That’s wonderful! And she’s pretty talented

What a great idea. I don’t know anyone involved in charity like this, but it would be perfect for some of the swag I have from reviews and conferences.

Yes, I donate a number of items that I win, or obtain through company promo’s or coupons to other causes such as the Food Bank, Children’s Shelter, and the Red Cross, or to individuals. I give away items as well, or sometimes use items “in trade” for other favors such as services. Recently, my mom had to go to the hospital and have a pacemaker put in. I am disabled and we had a relative coming from out of town. I was able to use a gift card I had won to trade for housekeeping help, and for moving some storage containers and boxes. But most of all, I Love to share.

WOW that’s such a good idea! (the prizes) … I’ve donated things to disaster relief funds, good will, and also give to my sister who doesn’t have a lot of extra cash for herself. (dealbunny20 @ gmail dot com)

It’s not a charity but I might make baskets like those for our family reunion. We do an auction to cover the costs of renting the banquet hall every year. thismomwins@gmail.com

  • Ravzie

I donate prizes and things I can’t use all the time.  The hospital I work for is having a drive right now to provide school supplies for children in the homeless shelter.  I contributed a very nice backpack I won, in addition to some supplies I purchased to help.  I love to get things for free, but it also makes me happy to share those items.  So I’m a giver and a receiver, LOL.

I give it away to friends and family and extra food items I get go to a local food pantry – My employeer holds a drive for them a few times a year.  I wish I could put baskets together like your mom – they look seriously professional!

  • alucky13

That’s very cool that you are a part of that. I like to share and would love to be in that position more often. alucky13 at hotmail dot com

Wonderful idea. I love the bows, too! What a talent! We donate to our local food pantry and children’s shelters.. My husband works for a charity that promotes food security and disaster relief, so there’s a lot of opportunity there for our family to get involved.

  • mcgraw14me

I like to do both. Love to donate items and like to try to win prizes! Love your Mom’s baskets, they look great!! tmcgraw72@aol.com

  • Jamaise Wilson

That’s a really nice idea. Nothing I get ever goes to waste either – if I can’t use it, I can always find a family member who can, and if I can’t, I donate to our local St.Martin Deplores center. jamaisew@gmail.com
