Hubby’s Fried Food

Hubby fries food in propane cookerWhen I travel I try to encourage Hubby and T to cook dinner at home while I’m away. I used to buy food and have a menu planned for them, but they did not really go along with that program. Now I just encourage them to just make their own menu plan and go shopping. Luckily T is a great grocery shopper after going with me to the store for so many years. They tend to grill a lot of things while I’m gone, but on one of my most recent absences Hubby bought himself a propane fish cooker at Bass Pro Shop (Hubby would live there if he could I think). Now while I love a good fish fry (my dad makes the best fried fish) and I love hush puppies, that was the entire meal for Hubby and T one night. Ack – I told him to add veggies next time. His reply, “ok I will fry up some veggies too”. Men!

zatarains fish fryFor the fish Hubby was frying crappie (no, not bad – the fish called crappie) that he caught up at Mark Twain Lake. I think this may have been the first time Hubby has fried fish actually. He used peanut oil in his propane fish cooker, heated to about 350° F. To bread the fish he used Zatarain’s Seasoned Fish-Fri exactly as directed on the package. Just put the coating in a bag and drop the fish pieces in and toss around. Then fry. Drain on paper towels. They both really enjoyed the fish. I was not here so I will take their word for it, but I’m sure it still will not be as good as my dad’s fish.

For their “side item” he made hush puppies. I guess he considered this their vegetable. I remember the night he made these he was very excited because he texted me about them and when I called him that night he went on and on about them also. Honestly, I never knew he was such a hush puppy fan. He bought this package of Martha White Hush Puppy Mix and used milk with it to mix up the batter. Then he just dropped in little dollops of the batter into the oil. This was still the peanut oil at 350° F that he had done the fish in. They float when they are done, just a few minutes.

He is anxious to fry more food. Hopefully if he does it when I am home I can at least get them to also eat a lot of unfried veggies as part of the meal too. I know fried tastes good, really I do, but a little goes a long way.

Do you deep fry foods at home? Have you tried any of the items Hubby made?

Disclosure: NONE – these are all items we just bought on our own and are sharing our results with you.

I make my husband go outside to fry food. We have a gazebo in the backyard (the grill is there under cover also), so Ken takes the deep-fat fryer outside to make goodies, because I can’t stand it when the house smells like grease!

Yep, that is where he was. He apparently only cooks outside now LOL

You mean hush puppies aren’t a vegetable ? They are made of corn you know :) Honestly crappie are some of the best fresh caught fish – flavorful and yummy. My hubby isn’t a fisherman and I love fish!

Nope, sorry in my book hush puppies aren’t a veggie LOL.

As much as I might love fried foods, my arteries are hardening and my rump is expanding just looking at the pictures….

I have never tried to deep fry anything at home. It seems like a hassle–and I’m not sure it would turn out as well as fried food in restaurants. Looks fun though!

My husband is a meat and potatoes guy and his potatoes are usually fried in oil (sigh). He has fried fresh fish in our house but I cannot stand the smell that lingers (for days) afterwards so I encourage him to fry most of his foods outside on the patio. As for hush puppies, sad to say but I haven’t had those in years and they were at Red Lobster, I believe. Pretty pathetic, eh? ;)

I dont have a kitchen deep frier but an outdoor one like your hubby’s might be fun to try! I usually fry things in a pan but hate the messy (and sometimes painful) splatters. Fried veggies would be fun to make, like what you can buy at fairs!

I’m not a big fried food fan, but when it’s a fish fry I don’t worry about the veggies. I only eat fried food like that a few times a year.

The Zatarain’s Seasoned Fish-Fri mixed with beer makes a great fish batter if you want battered instead of breaded fish.

I love a good fish fry! We don’t deep fry at home, we’ve strictly gotten into baking eveything now, even our beloved falafel (turns out very well, actually!) Totally craving hush puppies now, too.. it’s bringing back childhood Long John Silver’s memories!
