10 Unique Uses for Your Smartphone

unique ideasWe all know our smartphones can make telephone calls, send and receive text messages, take and share photographs, and even play some games and help out with work. There is really so much more than many have not yet realized their smartphone can also do. Here are ten unique uses for your smartphone.

  1. Remind Yourself
Use your smartphone camera to snap quick pics of anything you need to remember. Take a photo of the parking lot level you are on. Instead of tearing off a phone number tab on a flyer, instead snap a photo of the entire flyer so you have the phone number and all the details. Need to purchase more of a very particular item? Take a photo of the package you already have so you can match it up exactly in the store regardless of how many varieties they have. That last tip is great for sending husbands to the store for you too!
  2. TV Remote
So we all seem to misplace our remote controls for the TV. Personally, I think the couch grabs them and hides them on us on purpose and then laughs when we can’t find them. As much as we lose the remote, most of us do not misplace our smartphones. Download an app for your phone that turns it into a remote control for your TV! Your options will vary depending on your TV and your smartphone. Search “remote control” or “TV remote” in your favorite app store for options.
  3. Deposit a Check
Many banks (and PayPal) now offer you the ability to take a photo of the front and endorsed back of a check and have it deposited into your banking account. Check your banks website to see if they offer this service. It is super handy and saves you a trip to the bank.
  4. Sound Machines
Hubby likes to play common ringtones in public places to see how many people reach for their phones to see if someone is calling. You can download apps with sounds for applause, cheering, booing, laughter and such to annoy/amuse your friends. And yes, there are even fart noise apps if you find that funny.
  5. Mirror, Mirror
There are two different ways to use your smartphone as a mirror. If you have a rear-facing camera just open the app and turn the display to see yourself. if you do not have the rear-facing camera just hold your camera out backwards and snap a photo of yourself and then look at it. Instant mirrors anywhere.
  6. Scavenger Hunt
Do you remember going on scavenger hunts and having to collect a bunch of odd things? Instead of bugging people to give you things, now you can just bug them to take a photo of it. When the teams return go through the photos to see who found the most items. Tip – make sure each team only uses one device.
  7. GPS for Driving or Walking
Since many have GPS built into their car, sometimes the GPS ability of our smartphones are forgotten. The map apps really do a great job though if you need them. If you will be using this in your car regularly get yourself a mount for your dashboard. Don’t forget about using the GPS when you are walking too – switch the app so that it knows you are walking and it will help you around the city.
  8. Save Your Thumbs
Headed to a concert? No need to take a lighter to wave during the ballads any longer. Download the Zippo Lighter app instead and save your thumbs from burning holding up that hot lighter.
  9. Digital Tape Measure
We always are misplacing tape measures. No need to worry now, there are several tape measure apps available. Aim your phone and digitally take your measurements and save them to your phone. Perfect for trips to the hardware or paint store.
  10. What Is That?
Visual Search is progressing and with Bing Vision or Google Goggles it is possible to point your smartphone camera at an object and instantly find out what it is. While it does not work for everything under the sun, it still is very clever and great when traveling I think.

What are the unique ways that you use your smartphone?

Oooh a tape measure! I need to use mine for that!

This is the first time I have heard of a digital tape measure – that sounds really cool. One of these days, I will have to jump on the smartphone train, but for now – a simple phone works for me.

I had never heard of the digital tape measure. (From the comments, I’m not alone). What a great idea. I”ll have to put the app on my husband’s phone and maybe he’ll actually finish a DIY project. (tiffanychristian at charter dot net)

      LOL – good idea Tiffany!

What great ideas! I had no idea you could take your measurements with your phone. I use mine often to take photos of stuff I want my hubby to pick up on his way home. I also love my “to do” list app – it helps keep me organized and productive!

I love my to do list also – I use Any.Do

  • Margie

I like the idea of taking a photo of your parking level! That would have come in handy a few times.

They have specific apps to help you with parking spots also, but I have found just taking that simple photo works best. My poor Hubby has lost the car a few times before – he does this now too.

ok this made me laugh at times and at other times I took pause and was amazed at how technology has evolved in such a short period of time .. our great granparents would believe us if we told them what we can do with a phone haha I am going to go check out Bing Vision or Google Goggles right now… thanks

It is amazing! Very prevalent too, even for those that do not have smartphones. I visited my Grandpa who doesn’t use a smartphone but he knew that I could quickly look up start times of 2 baseball games and who the pitcher was going to be on my phone.

  • Tracy @ Cotton Pickin Cute

Great tips – now I need a smart phone!!!

  • slehan

Now I wish I had a smart phone. Didn’t realize all the things it can do. But if I remember to take my iPod touch with me, it has a camera for those things.

I think that is a great tip about taking a picture of the parking garage! I “loose” my car all the time!

  • GlArthy

several of my friends use their’s to keep check on Points per meal. It’s amazing to hear them say while thinking of dinner, how many Points they have left to ‘eat’.

I don’t have a smartphone, but some of these sound like good ideas, if I had one. I must frown at your husband’s ringtone game, though. The last thing we need is another phone going off to disturb everyone else around. Years ago, I read about a paint developed in Europe that would block cell phone signals. Theaters (live and movie) and restaurants are among the places that ought to use that stuff. I don’t think I’ve ever heard a phone ring then saw the person jump up and head off to an emergency. It’s usually, “Oh, I’m having dinner (or shopping or watching a movie), what are you doing?”

What imaginative uses! I think the digital tape measure could really come in handy. I don’t know how many times we’ve taken out a dollar bill to try to figure out the dimensions of something. I think I’ll have to look into that one for sure!

  • AngelaLilly

LOVE the remind yourself suggestions! Fantastic! OH and there are mirror apps for smartphones too. Not sure any of them work but they are out there. NEVER heard of the check thing! That is so cool! Will have to tell hubby about the tape measuring apps. so cool! Thanks for this!

Perhaps it’s not so unique, but I do use my phone to find cheaper gas with the Gas Buddy app.

  • http://brokenwon.blogspot.com Wendy T

That is all so amazing. I had NO idea there is so much you can do. But then again, it was only about two years ago that I sent my first text message, so I’m a bit behind the times.

I don’t have a smartphone. I do misplace my phone often enough and don’t have a home phone to call it from. I found an online service that will call it for me when I don’t where it is. That has been helpful.

If I ever get a smartphone, I’ll be back to re-read this list.

I didn’t know there was a digital tape measuring app for smart phones. I definitely need to download this. It will be so much easier to decorate my place now. Thanks for the tip.

  • @cammiLH

I love the scavenger hunt idea! What a fun birthday game idea for Tweens!! .. And I use my gps (RunKeeper) app almost every day when I walk my dogs.. :)

  • Katherine neves

Thanks so much for the wonderful information Robyn you rock

  • Toundelea Johnson

I use my phone for everything but one of my favorite apps allows me to record voice reminders to myself. (This is where things get a little weird)…I always start the recording in a sweet way and eventually end the voice reminder with something harsh…My favorite thing to say is “You’re a total loser if you don’t get this done on time”…SMH at meee

  • Kerry Genaw

I have tried the sound machine on my phone, haven’t found one that’s quite good enough but I’m sure there are lots of different apps out there. Tape measure is a good idea – will need to try that one. Thanks for the ideas!
