Cartoons Throwback Thursday

This week for Throwback Thursday I thought I would talk about cartoons from back in the day. When I was a little girl in the 70s and 80s we would wake up on Saturday morning, while our parents slept in (if they were lucky), make a bowl of some deliciously sugary fun cereal, and head downstairs to watch cartoons in the family room – of course leaving a small sugary trail of cereal along the way. After school there was more cartoon time too. Of course, we only had 6 channels to pick from – ABC, NBC, CBS, PBS, and 2 local stations. We watched when they were on because we didn’t have DVDs, VCRs, or YouTube to watch them on. Cartoons these days are just not the same as when I was a kid. Here are a few of my favorites…

bugs bunny  TweetyWile_E_Coyote

Bugs Bunny and his pals were, and still are, my favorites.

george-of-the-junglegrape_ape

My dad liked cartoons too – I remember that George of the Jungle and Grape Ape seemed to be some of his favorites. He used to sing the George of the Jungle theme song all the time.

hong kong phooeyspeedracer

Even though I did not meet Hubby until I was 16, I do know that Hong Kong Phooey and Speed Racer were two of his favorite cartoons to watch as a kid.

popeye   TomandJerryTitleCardc

I think they played Popeye and Tom and Jerry cartoons the most. Some I liked, some I did not.

school_house_rock

I loved School House Rock on Saturday mornings. These were tossed in between commercials and the other cartoons. We learned how a bill becomes a law, what the function of a conjunction was and a lot of other great stuff from these shorts.

speed buggy scooby doo mystery

Speedy Buggy and Scooby Doo were more favorites.

The_Bullwinkle_Show

The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show was never on enough. I really loved all the different characters they had. Great stuff!

heckle-and-jeckle

Heckle and Jeckle were my least favorite cartoon growing up. They just annoyed me!

What were your favorite cartoons growing up? Do you still watch cartoons now?

    The Smurfs!

I watched ‘Scooby Doo.’ Loved the mysteries, but they could get VERY scary. At least, to a kid they were scary. Loved ‘Bugs Bunny.’ Also liked ‘the comic book’ cartoons, such as ‘The Archies.’ They were fun. It always bugged me when my mom wanted to take me shopping on a Saturday morning, because that was just about the ONLY time cartoons were on, and for sure, one might NEVER get to see them again.

I loved Saturday morning cartoons when I was young. Another one of my favorites was The Magilla Gorilla Show.

  • Lauralee Hensley

When I was very little (and I don’t know if they weren’t re-runs from previous years or not) we would watch Mr. Magoo. I saw that you can watch it again if you have Amazon Prime. Loved Scooby Doo, but sometimes had nightmares from it (still get nightmares pretty easy, so no surprise as a kid I would). I don’t think I watched as many cartoons as most kids because I preferred sleeping in on Saturdays and on Sundays we were up early to get ready for Sunday School and Church. When I got to stay home from Church (stayed home with Dad if I was sick) I’d get to watch Bullwinkle and the Yogi Bear Shows.

I loved cartoons when I was a kid. Scooby Doo and Schoolhouse Rock were my favorites. I’m hoping to find some of the classic Schoolhouse Rock videos to show my niece when she gets a little older.

I don’t really watch cartoons on Saturday mornings the way I used to (Tom and Jerry was a favorite), but I enjoy animated movies that are good for the whole family!

I really miss all the old cartoons and wish they would still have them compared to some of these they have now. I really do not like them at all.

I loved Tom & Jerry and School House Rock…the classics. I don’t watch any now.

  • Craig S.

I love all those too! I was more of an 80′s child so I was really into GI Joe and Transformers. Others were Pac-MAn, Dragons Lair, Voltron, Dungeons and Dragons. Cartoons back then were more about the story then, now I think it’s more about stimulation, the cartoons today are so ADHD crazy, no wonder the kid’s are bouncing off the walls.

Part of my signature used to be Tweety signing my name. That was so cute but when I changed comps I don’t know where he went. I thought I moved everything over. Ok, back to the net. Was there YouTube and DVDs back then? Maybe not.

I love it! This reminds me of every Saturday morning I had growing up :)

I liked rainbow bright as a kid.

  • kminer1

My favorite was Bugs Bunny/Road Runner. I don’t watch cartoons now. Thanks

  • Eileen

Tom and Jerry and the Road Runner were my favorites. Now cartoons are so strange and have WAY too much info that kids should not have..IMO. It’s just not the same…

I loved my cartoons as a kid! Really in love. I found first love with Jonny Quest. Then I was in love with Aqua Lad, not Aqua Man. Then I was in love with Robin, not Batman – it might as well have been a cartoon, right? And then I was so very much in love with Speed Racer. Do you see a pattern here??? But I am over forming unnatural attractions to animated characters. LOL

  • slehan

Rocky and Bullwinkle! And one older one: Mighty Mouse! The last cartoon I saw was Brave in the theater.

  • Kate F.

I loved Bugs Bunny, Scooby Doo, and Tom and Jerry!

  • Jimmy

Scooby Doo was one of my favorites too. I watched Tom and Jerry but it wasn’t a favorite of mine. I also liked Gummi Bears and The Flintstones
