We love Mexican food of all kinds – authentic, TexMex, even Americanized Mexican food. They are all very unique flavors. Homemade tacos were one of my very favorite things as a kid even, I loved when Mom made them. We have done Mexican Make Your Own meals with guests too – I put out all kinds of the fixings including taco shells, tortillas, flavored meats, cheeses, salsas, beans, and just about everything under the sun you can think of. Then everyone can make exactly what they want and exactly the way they like it. This is always a hit with our guests!
Disclosure: I received samples of the Old El Paso products from #MyBlogSpark on behalf of General Mills in order to facilitate this review. They are also providing the prize package for the giveaway.
Old El Paso has some new products out that they sent me to try. First are the new Old El Paso Mexican Cooking Sauces. These come in little pouches and are ready to go, just stir them into whatever you would like. I used the Roasted Tomato with ground beef already and it was a very nice and mild flavor. A different taste than the regular Old El Paso taco seasoning, but still very good. I’m going to try the Old El Paso Chipotle Mexican Cooking Sauce to make some stuffed green peppers – this should give the stuffing a nice kick to it! And I think the Old El Paso Child & Roasted Garlic Mexican Cooking Sauce I will use to make some chicken enchiladas.
The other new product we tried were the Old El Paso Stand ‘N Stuff Soft Flour Tortillas. I was not quite sure about these. I actually am not a soft taco fan, but I do love the Stand ‘N Stuff crunchy taco shells. I made both types this night for dinner. Hubby tried out the soft shells.
So they are already “pre-formed” into little boats. To heat them up in the oven (remember I was doing crunchy shells too) you have to totally take them out of the package and wrap them in foil. I thought this was kind of a pain to be honest. You have to be careful with the foil or you would just squish them I think which would ruin the whole “stand ‘n stuff” part. I would prefer a package I could put right into the oven. I don’t think I would buy these particular tortillas again for my family, but I think they would be great for families who really like soft tacos. The taste was just fine, just not what we generally eat as far as tacos. Just like the crunchy Stand ‘N Stuff though, they make filling your tacos so much easier, especially for the kids!
I set out all of the extra fixings for our meal. We had lettuce from our garden, tomatoes from our garden, some pre-grated Mexican cheese (I know I like freshly grated usually but for this I used the bag), some fresh cilantro from the garden, black olives, fresh avocado slices, and some amazing corn and chile salsa (from Trader Joes), plus the meat and sour cream. Yummy! Oh and I made Hubby some Old El Paso Refried Beans (the can) too – he likes them, I don’t.
You can see the Ole El Paso Stand ‘N Stuff Soft Flour Tortillas just stand on their own and you can easily fill them up with any toppings you like.
Isn’t it fun to make your own food like this? Kids especially love it! The one tip I have for this though is to portion out the toppings for the kids because sometimes they can get a little crazy with it. Just make them each their own plate with an appropriate amount of each of the toppings. This way they know what they have to work with.
I admit I am now hungry for tacos again! We will have to have them again next week I guess when I am back from Chicago. You can find out more about the new Old El Paso products on their website and make sure to like Old El Paso on Facebook for more fun.
