This is the place to go if you are into mermaids! It has been around for many years – about an hour north of Tampa – and is still open today. My grandparents lived in Florida for a few years so I’m sure this was during one of our visits. Based on the pictures I think it was a very hot day because none of us look all that happy.
What I remember most is the mermaid show. You sit in front of this large tank that is decorated to look like the bottom of the sea and the mermaids do a show underwater. A kind of swimming/dancing combo kind of thing.
My brother and I with one of the mermaid statues. Don’t you love my brothers striped knee socks? If you notice my feet I have on my wooden Dr. Scholl’s sandals, remember those? In that little bag in my hand I have a necklace that I got there. You could pick an oyster from a selection of them and hopefully it had a pearl inside – mine did! I had it put into a little gold cage pendant. I wonder what ever happened to that necklace.
Here is the whole family. Me, my mom, dad, and brother again. My grandparents must have been with us and taking the picture. Love my dad’s look with his squinting from the sun and the cigarette hanging from his mouth.
I would love to go back to Weeki Wachee someday, just to see what I remember and what has changed.
Do you remember any of your family vacations from when you were a kid? What was your favorite?
