Unfortunately I have always had trouble sleeping. It stinks. It is not every night, but when it happens I can be so tired but for whatever reason I just cannot fall asleep. It makes me crazy at the time and cranky the next day. Finally I thought I would try something for this but I did not want a prescription sleeping pill as I hear a lot of crazy things about them. It is hard to get a hold of my doctor to just ask a question for things like this so I decided to try the Walgreens Pharmacy Chat feature they have in their app and online. Walgreens app rocks and I love it for medication refills especially. Over the years I have asked the pharmacists in Walgreens stores lots of questions about various things and I feel I can trust them so I figured the online pharmacists chat for Walgreens should be just as trustworthy.
Since I was at home I did this on my computer – it was really simple to open the chat and there was no super long wait like I would have had calling my doctor’s office. I told them I was looking for something to help me sleep but that I had high blood pressure and I needed to make sure it would not be a problem with that. The pharmacist sent me a link to Wal-Som Sleeping Aid on the Walgreens website. I asked again about my blood pressure and she assured me this would not be a problem. Then I asked if I would feel like I had a hangover the next day because I have heard other people mention this. She was very honest and said yes that some people feel a bit like that the next morning. Then she said that all sleep aids like this have a Benadryl type medication in them and so they all will have that impact for some people. I asked her what was the difference then between buying the Wal-Som or Benadryl (or Wal-dryl) and she said there was no difference. Interesting!
So I headed to Walgreens. Although, I do love that because I could do this from home or anywhere with the app that I could have just as easily texted Hubby the info to pick up on the way home. This day though I went myself because I wanted to take a look at some nail polish stuff too. First I picked up those things and then headed over to the pharmacy. It was packed over there, it is that time of the year plus St. Louis is being hit hard by the flu right now – luckily I had my flu shot! You can track your immunization history with Walgreens too. Anyway I found the Wal-Som – several varieties actually and then I decided to compare that to the Wal-dryl also. The only difference was that the Wal-Som was 50mg of Diphenhydramine HCI and all of the Benadryl and Wal-dryl were 25mg of Diphenhydramine HCI. The price was lower though for the Wal-dryl even though I would have to take two of those to have 50mg of the medicine. I was glad the pharmacist shared that with me because she saved me some money!
Before we finished the chat pharmacist also reminded me that this is just for occasional use and to check with my doctor if the problem was more persistent or this did not help me. It was a very simple and quick chat and she answered all of my questions. I would be more than happy to use the Walgreens Pharmacy Chat again. This is something I am going to share with my son too. He lives out on his own now and does not always like to ask Mom and Dad for advice on things but I think he would be comfortable using the chat service for sure.
As for sleeping, the Wal-Dry did help! Woohoo! It is not my go to thing for getting a good night’s sleep but rather an option if other things do not work. My goal is to not use medications when I do not have to. I am working on putting my phone and tablet down at night (gosh that is hard), doing some meditation, and just trying to relax more to help with my sleep but I am glad that I have a back-up plan now as needed.
On a side note, I am co-hosting a Twitter party for #WalgreensRX on Thursday and I hope you can join us!
Do you think you would like being able to chat with a pharmacist online or within your Walgreens app? How or when would you use the service?
