The Winter Olympics start today and it always reminds me of Dorothy Hamill and I thought the perfect topic for Throwback Thursday! She was a star in the 1976 Winter Olympics in Austria. I remember being a little girl and watching her ice skate. She made me want to ice skate too! Sadly I only tried once and was not very good at it – one of these days I will try again. Even though I did not become an ice skating super star like she was, Dorothy Hamill was still very much a hero to me as a little girl. To see someone, a young girl, accomplish so much was incredible to me! Just like so many other girls the one thing we could do to be like Dorothy was to get a haircut like hers! I rocked the Dorothy Hamill for a few years when I was a kid and loved it!
Last year at the Type-A Conference (it is my favorite social media conference and I will be there again for Type-A 2014 conference) I was so surprised to learn that Dorothy Hamill was there and was going to speak to us! O-M-G! I am not one to be star struck generally but I really was this time. Even better was that I had the picture of me and my Dorothy hair with me! I store everything in SkyDrive so I was easily able to pull up that photo and when I got to meet Dorothy I showed it to her! She seemed so genuinely nice and honored that I had that photo with me to share with her.
So as I watch the Olympics the next couple of weeks I will often remember being a young girl and watching Dorothy Hamill skating along with all the other athletes. I know that the athletes have such high hopes and such pressure on them but I hope they can enjoy the games as much as we enjoy watching them and I hope there are women Olympians in this year’s event that are heroes to little girls today!
As a side note, I have written a post over at BlogHer, Sochi 2014: 6 Olympic Party Ideas, with ideas on creating a party or just fun things to do with the family to celebrate the Olympics as you watch. That post was inspired by my Olympics Pinterest board. I hope you can find some ideas to make the Olympics even more fun for you and your family!
Do you have a favorite memory of any past winter Olympic games? A hero?[signoff]
