Recently MomTrends asked me to check out the new menu at Houlihan’s restaurant. We already love going to Houlihan’s so it was a no brainer for me to say yes and check it out. They even have provided me a gift certificate to give away to one of my lucky readers! Yes, I was compensated but the opinions are 100% my own as always!
Even though I am in the process of losing weight I still like to go out to eat and enjoy myself. At a lot of restaurants the “healthy” menu items are kind of blah – I do not want blah – I want FLAVOR! Houlihan’s new special menu has several options under 590 calories and they sounded good. Hubby and I went for dinner tonight and decided to try a few things.
First up, a cocktail! On their new menu is this X-Rated Moscato Martini with just 140 calories. For a sweet drink like this that is not a bad calorie count at all. The drink has Skyy Infusions Moscato Grape Vodka, premium X-RatedFusion Liqueur infused with organic blood orange juice, house sour, and fresh cranberry juice. This was just my kind of drink!
Hubby is more of a beer kind of guy. He loved the coasters – I gave into beer pressure. Ha! That is so him! He had a Budweiser.
The special menu is a limited time thing so try it now while you can. Hopefully, Houlihan’s will get good feedback on these items and add them to their regular everyday menu.
Hubby and I like to have an appetizer. We always share because I only eat a bit of it. The steamed edamame is not new at Houlihan’s but it is so delicious. Hubby had never had them before and he even liked them. Edamame are young soybeans, they steam them and sprinkle with kosher salt and toasted sesame seeds. Some eat the outer pod, but I find it a bit chewy. Instead I pop it open just a bit, then dip it into the spicy shaoxing wine sauce they come with. Put it in your mouth and use your teeth to slide out the little beans inside and then discard the pod.
Now this next item is not on that light menu at all but it just is not a trip to Houlihan’s without a bite of their baked potato soup topped with bacon, cheddar and scallions. This is a total comfort food item – a rich creamy soup with just the right amount of potatoes and a heaping helping of those toppings. This is just a cup of the soup but it is a lot – we brought home leftovers of it.
For my entrée I opted to try the new rice noodle salad with ginger-soy USDA Prime top sirloin with Napa slaw, basil, mint, snow peas, cilantro, scallions, roasted peanuts and a chili-lime dressing. This was really light and refreshing with all of the fresh herbs in it and the steak was hearty and savory enough to make it a substantial meal. The salad was actually quite large and I couldn’t finish it all. My steak was just a tiny bit on the tough side, but it still was very flavorful and I would order this again. Oh, and this is only 590 calories for the entire thing!
Hubby is on a weird kick lately and orders fettuccini Alfredo with chicken at a lot of places. Whatever floats his boat I guess. I like the dish, but I like trying different things. He was quite happy with this dish though and it was a decent sized portion for his manly-man appetite. This is on their regular menu.
And who could end a meal without a dessert? We both love key lime so we opted to share a key lime mousse from the new special menu. Now this is 420 calories, but that still is not terrible for a dessert with a creamy key lime mousse, crystallized graham cracker crust and whipped cream! I had a couple of bites and Hubby obligingly woofed down the rest of it. They also have a chocolate mousse dessert similar to this, maybe next time we will try that.
I have to mention also that our server, Lauren, was particularly great! We generally have good service at Houlihan’s in Creve Coeur, Missouri but she was better than most for sure. Thanks Lauren!
Our dinner was lovely. Hubby and I enjoyed trying new tastes and old favorites tonight. It is always nice to sit in a quiet booth with him and talk about our day and share bites with each other. We definitely will continue to dine at Houlihan’s and I am very happy about the new options on the menu!
