A few days ago Facebook updated the control we have over our Facebook newsfeed. The news feed is what you see on the main page of Facebook once you login – all those stories, updates, photos, and such from people you are friends with. This means when viewing in the default “Top Stories” you will see these people/pages/groups ahead of others. The tutorial below is based on the full web based version of Facebook. If you are viewing Facebook on your phone/tablet via an app these settings will appear a bit differently.
Important Note: You can select up to 30 people or pages to see first. They are not ranked in any order though (not in order selected).
- Step 1: Log in to Facebook
- Step 2: Click the down arrow (circled below), and then select “News Feed Preferences” (highlighted below).
- Step 3: News Feed Preferences Box Will Pop Up
It will open to the Summary page which gives you options on the left as well as a list of “seen most last week” and “unfollowed”
- Step 4: Pick People to See First
Once you click on People (on the left) you will see a list of friends, listed by “seen most last week” or “alphabetical order”. From that list, click on the down arrow. You will be able to select “See First”, “Default” or “Unfollow”. If that person is a higher priority for you select “See First”, otherwise leave alone. Sadly you cannot search for people in this popup box – that would make life much easier.
- Step 5: Pick Pages to See First
On the left side again, pick Pages. This will bring up the list of pages, like Robyn’s Online World, that you are following. Just like you did with people in Step 4, use the drop down arrow to change to “See First” if you would like a page to appear first in your stream. You can also unfollow pages easily here.
- Step 6: Pick Groups to See First
The same as People and Pages, but for Facebook Groups that you belong to. My suggestion, if you always go to a group page daily then you can probably leave as default. But for other groups you don’t visit daily but want to keep on top, those you should add as “See First”
- Step 7: Pick More to See First
This will most likely be a list of apps that are already hidden from your news feed. I block almost all game related posts from being shown in my news feed because it just is not important to me.
- Step 8: Click Close
That’s all there is to it.
More Facebook News Feed Tips:
- Per Person Settings
You can adjust the settings for an individual person when you go to their own Facebook wall. Go to their page and then click the down arrow under “Friends” at the bottom of their cover page photo. From there you can opt to “Get Notifications” of when that person posts on Facebook – use this for people you really do not want to miss! You can also add that person to any list you like, suggest other friends for them, or unfriend them. Under the “Following” or “See First” drop down arrow you can change those options for that individual as well.
- News Feed Major Option
The major Facebook newsfeed option is still on the left of the main page. From the drop down arrow next to News Feed select Top Stories (this will implement your “See First” selections also) or “Most Recent”. I still prefer Most Recent for myself.
- Privacy Checkup
A reminder that you should regularly do a “Privacy Checkup” on Facebook because they change the defaults on a fairly regular basis. Generally the default options for privacy on Facebook are pretty open (public) since it is a social network. You can reach the Privacy Checkup from the drop down menu next to the lock (circled below). A box will pop up (2nd picture below), just follow the instructions there.
